Prayers, 1000 generations/simplistic records
by Davin Seay
Prayers,
the debut independent album from 1000 generations, the worship team
of the Indianapolis Vineyard, is a remarkably assured, evocative
and engaging offering from a group who has opened up worship's expressive
vocabulary by making the most of dynamics inherent in their original
material.
There is much on this collection of a dozen original tracks for
other church-based worship recording projects to emulate. More than
simply a rendering of live service, 1000 generations has constructed
a seamless thematic flow within the confines of the recording studio,
evincing a remarkable grasp of the essentials of the medium. This
is, in the best sense, a "concept album," a gracefully conceived
and executed musical journey encompassing a full range of emotions
and insight.
Constructed largely around simple percussive/piano arrangements,
prayers
is less a showcase of the group's modest individual talents than
it is a sum that is larger than its parts - which, it could be argued,
is the goal of true worship to begin with. That's no small accomplishment:
throughout this very special album, 1000 generations remains true
to a singular vision, a way of speaking to and about God that is
as liberating as it is exhilarating. From its resplendent cover
art to its delicate aural accents, prayers
is the best new album of the year.
